$2 investment

1 Mar

On the way to Arkansas, we had to stop at the Dirt Cheap in Southhaven.

I dug these lamps from the salvage rubble at 90% off. The yellow lamp has a small crack  but we plan on filling it with wood filler and spray painting all three. We don’t have lamp shades for any of them, but that’s okay because these shades are too contemporary for my taste anyways.

When we got to the register, willing to pay the $9 for the three lamps, the cashier told us the stock had been removed from the system. Obviously, I got excited. This is just one of the things you hope to hear when salvage shopping.

Unable to ring up the lamps, the supervisor told us that if we wanted to get them we had to buy a mystery shopping cart and pointed towards a row of  bulging buggies wrapped in saran wrap.  Since they were clearing the store for a new stock, she said we could get a buggy for $2 instead of the posted price of $7.

Hearing the cashier announce that the carts (sans cart) were $2, everyone in line bolted towards them. Dalaney yelled, “Get the cart with the plastic storage boxes!” So, obviously someone grabbed it. I panicked and threw myself on top of a cart that had an air mattress spilling out.

As you can see, they keep the mystery goodies sealed airtight.

We took the cart to our car to unload the items (an official rule).

We threw away a lot. We hoarded a lot.

But in the end, we left with a fire proof safe, Christmas cards, wrapping paper, two ultraviolet sanitation lights, an air mattress, a Monopoly board, and plastic Scrabble letters (I shrieked, but sure wish they were wooden).  Plus our darling lil’ lamps. All for less than what we originally planned on paying for the lamps.

    Wow. I’m in awe.

Going to dirt cheap with you and delanes (may I call him that?) is on my bucket list.

Will I comment on every post of yours?

You’ll just have to wait and see.

I can imagine Dalaney screaming to grab a cart and you throwing your body over the “mystery goodies”. Oh, I miss you!!! P.S. I need 2 of those yellow lamps for The Mack!
